Part 2
She looked out of the corner of her eye as the sunlight danced off the blonde highlights in Olivia’s hair and her green eyes sparkled in the mid-afternoon light. Olivia occasionally picked up a rock and tossed it out into the lake they were strolling past.
Olivia hadn’t made a comment since they had left the room for their walk and she seemed to be making an effort to not look at Natalia. They followed the path into a shaded area with tall bushes and trees. When Olivia couldn’t distract herself with rock tossing anymore, Natalia reached for her hand, entwining their fingers. Olivia looked down briefly, fighting the urge to let a stupid girl-crushing smile light up her face. Natalia could see the light ahead of them where the landscape opened up again, so she gathered her courage and stopped, turning Olivia around.
The older woman looked at Natalia with an odd mix of curiosity and nervousness. Natalia took a deep breath before letting it out, “So, I think I was supposed to tell you something, right?”
Olivia looked at her feet before glancing back up, the waver in her voice giving away her apprehension, “Yeah.”
Natalia nodded and tightened her grip on Olivia’s hand, “First of all, I don’t want to fight with you. We fight when we’re scared, and I’m tired of being scared. So, no more fighting, okay?”
“Okay.”
“Second, what we were fighting about was ridiculous. We’re making this so hard and we don’t have to. I love you. You love me.”
Olivia interrupted her, “But it’s so much more than that.”
Natalia looked intensely into Olivia’s eyes, trying to ensure that Olivia understood what she was talking about, “Don’t you think I know that? And I’m not talking about the fact that we’re two women, okay? I know you seem to think this is an issue for me, but it’s not. The scary part…the really scary part is that I’ve fallen madly in love with my best friend, and I’m so scared that if this doesn’t work out, I’ll not only lose you as my lover, but as my friend and my family too. I told you that you were everything to me and I didn’t say that lightly. That’s why I’ve wanted to take it slow and be careful with what we do.”
Olivia swallowed hard, fighting the tears, and pulled their hands up between them to place a light kiss on Natalia’s hand, “You won’t lose me. I’d do anything to have you, anything to be with you. Stupid me even tried to push you into a marriage with Frank just to keep from losing you completely. I’d give up anything if it meant you’d stay in my life. Natalia, we don’t have to do anything you’re not comfortable with, and I’ll,” Olivia struggled to finish the statement, “be okay if this, what we have right now, is all you can ever give me.”
She looked at Olivia for a moment, confused at what Olivia was trying to tell her, “I…what? What in the world are you saying, Olivia?”
“That I don’t want you to feel pressured. We don’t have to sleep together. I’ll be fine if we don’t,” Olivia barely got the last part out, not quite convinced of her own resolve with her decision. She figured insanity made people do strange things, now she’s just putting it into practice.
Natalia looked at her incredulous and dropped her hand, walking away, before turning back, “What in the world did I say to make you think I didn’t want to sleep with you?”
“Well, the whole part about not wanting to lose me as a friend and being scared if things don’t work out…I screw up everything. It’s inevitable so maybe it’s just best if we don’t…”
“No. No, you don’t get to make a unilateral decision like that,” Natalia ran her hands over her face, completely exasperated by the other woman, “I never said I didn’t want to sleep with you. In fact, I think I was pretty clear that my hesitations had nothing to do with the physical part.”
Olivia tilted her head to the side and threw her hands up, “But people are going to talk. It’s going to be…”
Natalia put her hand up and pointed a finger at Olivia, “I don’t give a damn what anyone in Springfield thinks. I know us and that’s all I need to know. I’ve lived with rumor and talk and speculation my whole life, and so have you. Why are you doing this? Why do you find a problem for us before it’s even there?”
“We’re fighting again.”
Natalia crossed her arms, “Answer the question.”
“I…,” Olivia looked at her dumbstruck, realizing she was momentarily unsure of her own reasoning, but she offered it anyway, “I’m scared of losing you too. I’m…God…I told you that I screw everything up and ruin every relationship I’ve ever been in. I don’t want to do that to you because that’ll just bring your own fears to life.”
Natalia threw up her arms, “Well, then I guess there’s really only one option here. You can’t ruin this relationship because we can’t keep fighting like this and we can’t stay stuck like this. I don’t want to. I want more with you. I want…I want to love you completely. And I want us to date and to kiss and to touch and…I want us to have all kinds of wonderful firsts but I also want many more seconds, thirds, and fourths. So, you see, you can’t ruin this relationship. It’s not an option.”
“You are so stubborn.”
Natalia came back to stand in front of Olivia and took her hand, “And you’re bull-headed, but I love you anyway.”
Olivia chuckled and pulled her in by the lapel of her jacket, smiling teasingly at her, “So, you want dates, huh?”
“Lots and lots of them,” Natalia smirked back.
“I think I can handle that,” Olivia gave her a slight tug and Natalia angled in a little as she watched Olivia’s mouth inch closer, anticipating her next move, but she was shocked to feel her jacket let go. When she refocused, Olivia had stepped back a few steps.
“Nuh uh, no kissing though. At least not until after the first date.”
Natalia glared at her, “So when’s the first date?”
Olivia bounced on her heels, perfectly pleased with herself at the moment. She wiggled her eyebrows, “Race you back to the room and if you beat me there, you’ll find out.”
With a mischievous smirk, Olivia turned and took off back down the path, leaving a shocked Natalia behind before she took off after her as well, “That’s cheating!”
