Title: The Unexpected, 4/?
Fandom: WMC/CM Crossover
Pairing: Emily/Cindy; Cindy/Lindsay and Emily/JJ implied, if you squint really hard.
Rating: Probably PG/PG-13 for right now. There will definitely be some NC-17 at some point, but I’ll forewarn you.
Disclaimer: Don’t own a damn thing except what’s in my head! If I did, I wouldn’t have to write these fics to fill in the blanks.
Warnings: This is un-beta’d. All mistakes are mine.
AN: Thanks to those reading. Seriously, the kudos are crack to me and probably the only reason why this part got cranked out so fast. I just started typing and *poof* there it was.
Lindsay shut the door and collapsed on the couch in Jill’s office. It was the only place she knew she could be left alone at the moment because Jill was out getting search warrants for one of the victim’s apartments. Apparently, the family didn’t want anyone nosing around in the woman’s business, but that wasn’t going to help them solve her murder.
She rubbed the space between her eyes as she laid back and stretched out on the couch. There was too much information coming in at once, and she needed a moment to breathe and slow the world down. She hated walking out on Cindy. She knew it hurt her, but she needed to step back and figure everything out.
Lindsay squeezed her fist together tightly as she ran through the emotions of a few moments ago. She found that she was fighting the urge to hit something or someone. She was simply put, angry. Cindy had kept a vital piece of information from her. Something that may have helped the police get a step closer to the killer, and maybe even kept the feds out of the situation. Now, Lindsay found herself dealing with a bunch of overanalyzing suits, a secretive friend, and a determined killer, all at the same time and it was pissing her off. How dare Cindy keep this from her? She wanted to shake the redhead and demand to know what other secrets she was keeping from her? What else was she hiding from Lindsay?
A door flying open made Lindsay jump off the couch.
“There you are! Where the hell have you been? I searched for you everywhere, and why is Cindy crying? What did you say to her?” Lindsay held up her hands at Jill’s mini-tirade.
“Hold up! I’ve been here the whole time and for the record, I didn’t say anything to Cindy.” Jill cocked an eyebrow at her friend.
“That would explain it then. Linds, you can’t just walk out on someone when they come out to you,” the brunette looked at her incredulously.
“You knew?”
“Honey, everyone knew but you,” Lindsay felt like she had been sucker-punched in the gut, the air rushing out of her lungs.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” Lindsay’s voice was small and she reeled from a whole new kind of shock.
Jill moved behind her desk and propped her high-heeled feet up on the edge, “First of all, it’s not my place to tell. Second, you were all up Pete’s ass. She told me while I stayed with her at the hospital after she was shot,” the blonde shrugged, “It was a bonding moment, and you couldn’t be bothered to be there for her.”
Lindsay stood there in the middle of the room, her shoulders showing the weight of this new information, when the harshness of Jill’s words hit her, “Um, ouch! That was kinda harsh, Jill.”
“You needed to hear it. Our friend’s life has been threatened, and this is no time to let your feelings, whatever they are, get in the way. Cindy wasn’t trying to hurt you by keeping something from you. She was trying to protect herself,” Jill got up and moved around the desk, looking her friend directly in the eye, “Not everything is about you, Lindsay. Get over yourself.”
Lindsay was speechless. Jill put a long sheet of paper in the palm of her hand, “Here.”
“What’s this?”
“Your search warrant. It’s only good for 24 hours. The family’s throwing a major hissy fit, so you better get over there while the getting’s good,” Lindsay simply nodded and walked out.
Jill took a deep breath as she watched Lindsay leave, only letting it out once the door had closed, feeling the weariness wash over her as the adrenaline rush waned from the confrontation, “Damn you, Lindsay Boxer.”
********
Lindsay pulled up to the front of the duplex and cut the engine. Jacobi had thankfully been quiet the whole time. She didn’t need his fatherly advice right now, though it was irritating enough that she could feel the disappointment radiating off of him. She put that aside. She’d have to deal with all these emotions later. Right now, they needed to get into this apartment to see if there were any clues to be found.
Lindsay knocked on the door and a partially bald middle-aged man greeted them, “Yes?”
“We’re Inspectors Boxer and Jacobi,” they showed their badges simultaneously, “Can we come in?”
The man shook his head, clearly not happy about the situation, but still he moved aside and opened the door wider, “I assume you have the warrant.”
Jacobi turned it over to him without a word, and they watched as he removed a pair of reading glasses to read the fine print.
“It’s legit,” Lindsay insisted, “Do you mind?”
“Forgive me, Inspector Boxer. I’m an attorney back home so I’m careful to read everything first.”
“Great,” Lindsay said with false enthusiasm and turned to roll her eyes at Jacobi, who held back his urge to laugh at his partner.
“Back home is where?” Jacobi took up the questioning, while Lindsay moved further into the apartment. A heavy-set woman with graying shoulder length hair came around the corner carrying a dishrag and plate.
“Paducah, Kentucky,” the man gestured to the woman, and then came up to wrap his arm around her, “This is Estel, my wife. I’m William.”
They all performed the pleasantries of shaking hands, and Jacobi gave his condolences, “You’re April Smith’s parents?”
“Yes, yes we are,” the coupled moved to the couch to sit down.
“What can you tell us about her?” The couple looked back and forth at each other and shifted uncomfortably. The father spoke up first.
“She’s…was basically a good girl. She got good grades in school, played sports, never got into drugs or anything. She moved out here several years ago for school.”
“What did you know of her friends, people she dated?” Lindsay wanted to get right to the point, but she wasn’t aware of how much the family knew of April’s personal life so she was feeling it out.
Mrs. Smith finally spoke up as she ringed the damp rag in her hands, “We didn’t really talk about it. She kept a lot of things from us.”
“What do you mean?” Jacobi probed.
Mr. Smith hugged his wife close as she started to cry, “She…April was…um, living as a lesbian.”
“Do you know if she had a girlfriend or if anyone had threatened her lately?” Lindsay stood up, feeling the urge to move. Something in the way, he talked about his daughter bothered Lindsay and she fought to keep her patience.
“Like my wife said, we didn’t talk about it.”
Jacobi stood as well, realizing that they weren’t going to get anything out of April’s parents, “Do you mind then if we look around?”
Mr. Smith nodded mutely as he cradled his crying wife closer. As they walked away, Mrs. Smith’s muffled voice spoke up, “Don’t tell anyone…please.”
“Excuse me?” Lindsay stepped back closer. The woman looked up with a tear-stained face. Lindsay sighed at having to deal with crying women twice in one day.
“Please, don’t tell anyone about April’s…lifestyle,” Lindsay’s teeth grated together, as she watched the older woman’s face redden with embarrassment.
“Inspector,” Mr. Smith spoke up, “We’re fairly prominent in our community. I’m a deacon in the church. The same church our family’s gone to all our lives. Both of our family’s have lived in Paducah going way back. It would be…,” he sighed, “We haven’t told anyone about April, and we’d like to keep it that way.”
Lindsay lost her patience with the man, “Sir, you do realize that your daughter’s sexuality is a vital factor in this case, right?”
“What?” Both husband and wife looked up at her incredulously.
“We think whoever killed your daughter did so because she was a lesbian,” she looked him dead in the eyes, “We’re almost certain this was a hate crime. Now, I’m sorry you have to deal with this in such an open manner, but we’re going to need as much information as possible if we’re going to catch your daughter’s killer. To do that, it may very well entail having to go public with this information, so I suggest you get over it. For your daughter’s sake.”
Stunned by this information, he merely nodded as his wife started crying fresh tears. Lindsay and Jacobi turned simultaneously to walk down the hall. Lindsay held in her disgust until they were out of earshot, “Bastard!”
Jacobi squeezed her shoulder, “Don’t worry, Linds. We’ll get the son of a bitch before…” His words trailed off. He didn’t have to say it.
